Former President Jimmy Carter, 96, and his wife Rosalynn Carter, 93, recently celebrated their historic 75th wedding anniversary, making them the longest-married presidential couple in American history. The Carters, known for their compassion and dedication to charitable causes like Habitat for Humanity, have gained even more admiration over the years for their commitment to serving others.
Surpassing the previous record of 73 years and 111 days held by George H.W. and Barbara Bush, Jimmy Carter credits his marriage to Rosalynn as the highlight of his life. “The best thing I ever did was marrying Rosalynn,” he shared.
The couple married on July 7, 1946, in their hometown of Plains, Georgia. Jimmy had just graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at 21, and Rosalynn was 18. Growing up as neighbors, Jimmy and Rosalynn’s bond was rooted in a lifelong friendship, as Rosalynn was best friends with Jimmy’s younger sister, Ruth.
Reflecting on their relationship, Jimmy revealed, “I’d known Rosalynn since the day she was born, and I just felt compatible with her.” Rosalynn fondly recalled falling in love after seeing a photograph of Jimmy in uniform, and their first date led to a kiss that remains vivid in Jimmy’s memory.
The Carters, who raised four children, credit their strong partnership to mutual support and encouragement. Rosalynn emphasized that Jimmy has always believed in her abilities, allowing her to accomplish things she never thought possible, including campaigning across the country.
For decades, the Carters have been dedicated supporters of Habitat for Humanity, helping build homes for those in need through their personal efforts and their Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Even in their nineties, they continue to volunteer and have helped more than 4,300 familiess find safe shelter, working alongside over 104,000 volunteers.
Faith has played a key role in keeping the couple connected. “We read the Bible together every night,” Jimmy shared, explaining how they stay spiritually connected even when apart.
With four children, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, the Carters’ marriage is a testament to love, faith, and shared values. Happy 75th anniversary to Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter!
