Bruce Springsteen’s wife and E Street Band member, Patti Scialfa, revealed that she has been battling cancer for several years. During the premiere of Springsteen’s new documentary, Rock Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Scialfa shared her diagnosis of multiple myeloma, which she received in 2018.
According to Variety, the diagnosis has forced Scialfa to step back from touring with her husband and the band. She explained, “This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.” Despite the challenges, she occasionally joins Springsteen for a few songs at shows, describing it as a treat and acknowledging that this is her new normal.
Previously, Scialfa mentioned to the Asbury Park Press that she decided to focus on her solo album and spend more time with her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, born in July 2022. She played only a few dates on Springsteen’s current tour, which began in February 2023, stating, “I didn’t feel as needed in a way because there were a lot of musicians on stage.”
Scialfa also noted that working on her solo album was an opportunity she seized while Springsteen was busy in the studio.
In addition to Scialfa’s health issues, Bruce Springsteen has faced his own challenges. Due to ongoing treatment for peptic ulcer disease, he had to postpone his remaining 2023 tour dates in September and canceled some summer 2024 dates due to vocal issues.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Patti Scialfa as she continues her fight against multiple myeloma. Please share this article with family and friends, and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
