People are demanding accountability from a dog owner who abandoned their pet just before Hurricane Milton struck. A viral video released by the Florida Highway Patrol on October 8 shows an officer responding to a distress call about a dog tied to a fence along I-75. The footage captures the dog standing in water up to its legs as the officer approaches cautiously.
In the video, the compassionate officer reassures the scared dog, saying, “It’s okay.” Despite the dog’s initial growling and barking, the officer responds calmly, acknowledging the animal’s fear with, “I don’t blame you. It’s okay.” The Florida Highway Patrol Tampa later tweeted, “FHP Troopers rescued a dog left tied to a pole on I-75 near Bruce B Downs Blvd this morning. Do NOT do this to your pets please.”
Hours later, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles confirmed that the dog had been rescued, stating, “The dog rescued by @FHPTampa is safe and receiving care.” The dog was taken to a vet for examination and received a clean bill of health. Many on social media have suggested naming the rescued dog “Trooper” in honor of the officers who saved it.
Public outrage over the abandonment has been widespread, with many expressing disgust at the owner’s actions and calling for legal repercussions. Comments included, “This is ridiculous. The owner needs to face legal consequences,” and “People who harm children and pets are the lowest in society and need to be dealt with accordingly.”
While there have been conflicting reports about whether the dog has been reclaimed by its owner, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has confirmed that these claims are inaccurate. The spokesperson assured that “the dog was rescued and taken to a vet where he received a clean bill of health. He is safe and being cared for at this time.”
This incident highlights not only the urgency of caring for animals during emergencies but also the need for responsible pet ownership, especially in hazardous conditions like hurricanes.
