Bob Barker’s Early Life and Career

Bob Barker’s story began on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. During his service in the United States Navy Reserve as a fighter pilot in World War II, he met his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Gideon, at an Ella Fitzgerald concert. They married in 1945, and Barker later pursued a degree in economics.

His journey to fame began in Los Angeles, where he hosted a radio show. Game show producer Ralph Edwards, searching for a new host for Truth or Consequences, took notice of Barker. From 1956 to 1975, he entertained audiences on the show, gaining widespread recognition. In 1967, he also began hosting the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants, but it was in 1972 when he joined The Price is Right that both he and the show became cultural phenomena.

A Long-Lasting Legacy

The Price is Right holds the title of the longest-running game show in history, and Barker, who became an executive producer in 1988, earned 14 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host, as well as four Emmys for his work as an executive producer.

Partnerships and Philanthropy

Barker credited his late wife, Dorothy Jo Gideon, for much of his success, saying she gave him the confidence to pursue his dreams. Gideon passed away in 1981 after battling lung cancer. Barker later found love again with Nancy Burnet, his partner of 40 years. Burnet believes Barker’s excellent health is due in part to his limited use of medication and long-time vegetarian diet. Despite turning 99, Barker only takes one prescription for his thyroid.

Throughout his career, Barker remained an enthusiastic and beloved figure. He made many guest appearances, including a memorable visit to The Price is Right on his 90th birthday. His energy and passion were key to the show’s enduring popularity.
