King Charles Attends Royal Variety Performance Solo—A First Since His Accession to the Throne…What was the reason?

King Charles made a solo appearance at the Royal Variety Performance, marking the first time he attended the event without Queen Camilla since ascending the throne in September 2022. The King, 76, was originally scheduled to attend with his wife, but Camilla withdrew a few hours before the event due to lingering symptoms from a recent chest infection.

King Charles III attends the Royal Variety Performance at Royal Albert Hall on November 22, 2024 in London, England. The annual Royal Variety Performance, the world's longest-running entertainment show, began with the first 'Royal Show' in 1912.

“Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms. After a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritize sufficient rest. With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance.”

The Event
Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Variety Performance is a long-standing tradition that celebrates performing arts and raises funds for the Royal Variety Charity, which supports entertainment industry professionals facing hardship. This year, the charity emphasized its Mental Health Grants Sub-Committee, which aids individuals grappling with challenges such as anxiety, depression, and addiction—issues often compounded by the unpredictability of entertainment careers.

Royal History
Charles has been a regular at the Royal Variety Performance, attending 16 times as Prince of Wales. His last involvement during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown was through a video message. In past years, other royal family members, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have represented the monarchy at the event.

A Busy Week
Despite his own health concerns—reportedly undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer—King Charles maintained a busy schedule. Earlier in the week, he joined Queen Camilla and Prince William in hosting a Diplomatic Corps reception on Nov. 19. On Nov. 20, Queen Camilla received an honorary doctorate from the University of London, presented by Princess Anne.

The Royal Variety Performance remains a significant event, showcasing the monarchy’s support for the performing arts and those who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
