“Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms. After a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritize sufficient rest. With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance.”

The Event
Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Variety Performance is a long-standing tradition that celebrates performing arts and raises funds for the Royal Variety Charity, which supports entertainment industry professionals facing hardship. This year, the charity emphasized its Mental Health Grants Sub-Committee, which aids individuals grappling with challenges such as anxiety, depression, and addiction—issues often compounded by the unpredictability of entertainment careers.

Highlights included a number from the West End production of Oliver!, a performance by Britain’s Got Talent winner Sydnie Christmas, and a song from The Devil Wears Prada musical.

Charles has been a regular at the Royal Variety Performance, attending 16 times as Prince of Wales. His last involvement during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown was through a video message. On Nov. 20, Queen Camilla received an honorary doctorate from the University of London, presented by Princess Anne.
