In a rare role reversal during a 1976 interview, Johnny Carson, the legendary “King of Late-Night,” switched places with his guest, actor Robert Blake, creating a comedic moment for the ages as Johnny became the guest on his own show.
Robert entered the set dressed casually in a plain white and green t-shirt and brown bell-bottom pants. With a grin, he sat down and said to Johnny, “Let us go among them.” Johnny quipped, “Would you like to go beat up a cleaning lady first? Tonight I feel a little overdressed. I should’ve worn my leather outfit.”
“You look fine,” Robert reassured him. Meanwhile, fellow guest Burt Reynolds noticed Robert’s t-shirt was on backward and asked if he was in a hurry. Robert explained that he turned the shirt inside out because it had writing on it, and he didn’t want to give the company free advertising.
As the antics continued, Johnny and Robert swapped chairs, impersonating each other. After a commercial break, Johnny returned with his hair disheveled, his tie undone, and began picking his nails while seated in the guest chair. Robert, now behind the desk, introduced Johnny by saying, “We have one of our more interesting guests here tonight.”
In a peak comedic moment, Johnny stood up, pulled his pants down, and crossed his legs as he sat back down. Robert, unfazed, covered him with a newspaper. Johnny cheekily remarked on Robert’s hosting, “Think it’s easy, huh?”
This unforgettable segment showcased Carson’s quick wit and ability to turn any situation into comedy gold. Video:
