Olivia Hussey, best known for her portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, has passed away. She died on Friday at her home, surrounded by family, though the cause of death has not been revealed. A statement posted on her Instagram described her as “a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all those who knew her.”
At just 15 years old, Hussey won a Golden Globe for her iconic role as Juliet in the film, which also earned an Academy Award. She starred alongside Leonard Whiting, who portrayed Romeo. The film, however, was not without controversy, particularly due to a scene featuring nudity involving the underage stars. In early 2023, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures and Criterion Collections regarding the distribution of that sequence, but the case was dropped in October.
Hussey was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, undergoing a mastectomy and entering remission. However, in 2018, she revealed to Express that a new tumor had developed. She is survived by her husband, David Glen Eisley, their three children—Alex, Max, and India—and her grandson, Greyson.
