On a quiet street where everyone knew each other by name, there lived an elderly man named Viktor. He barely spoke to anyone, rarely left his apartment, and no one knew exactly what he did or how he made a living.
But one thing everyone knew — strange sounds constantly came from his home.
Sometimes it was low growling, as if someone was scratching at the walls. Sometimes — a scream, almost human, but not quite. Nights were the worst: whining, constant barking, day after day. At times, it sounded as if someone inside was having a complete breakdown.
At first, the neighbors tolerated it. Later, they started knocking on his door, asking him to be quieter. Someone even left a note:
“Please take care of the noise. None of us can sleep at night.”
But there was no response. Viktor didn’t always open the door, and if he did, he would mutter something unintelligible and disappear again.
Over time, anxiety grew. Some neighbors were convinced he was losing his mind. Others thought maybe there were other people living there. A few even whispered about possible illegal activity. But no one knew the truth.
One day, everything changed.
For nearly a week, no one had seen Viktor. His door was locked, and his windows covered, as always. But the noises hadn’t stopped.
In fact, they had gotten worse. At night, there were frustrated squeals, grinding teeth, scratching on the floor, scraping sounds — as though something inside was desperately trying to escape.
On the seventh day, the residents couldn’t take it anymore. Two men went upstairs and began banging on his door. No answer.
They called the police, and when officers arrived, they broke the lock and finally opened the door.
What they found inside made everyone’s blood run cold.
The apartment was filled with nearly two dozen emaciated, starving dogs—some barely alive—wandering aimlessly in the rooms. A few lay beside Victor’s body, refusing to leave. The floor was littered with claw marks, feces, torn furniture, and signs of animal fights.
It turned out that Victor had been secretly rescuing stray dogs—feeding and sheltering them—afraid that if he told anyone, they’d be taken away. These dogs were his only friends. And for seven days, they were trapped inside, with no food or water.
Long after, neighbors would recall that chilling night with trembling voices. The house remained empty—seemingly unwilling to let go of its terrible secret.
